We had a great gig at
Hennessey's way back on September 7,
2003.
Susanna and Jaquelyn sang,
and Gene soloed on kazoo on
"Jazz Me Blues".
On October 5, Jeff,
the manager of Hennessey's
and our host, finally played his bass
guitar with us on "Pink
Panther" and on a B-flat
blues! Dave Horowitz
sat in on clarinet, Chris Voigtlander played conga,
and Susanna stopped by, too.
On November 2, Tate (age 9)
and Gabe (age 8) Chu joined
the band, playing the train
whistle on the Duke
Ellington classic, "Take the
'A' Train".
The Christmas Show on
December 7 was exceptional.
Josie Wells sang the blues,
everyone danced to "At
Last"
(Thanks, Rebecca!), we
played the holiday songs you
know, and the atmosphere was
warm and enjoyable. On
January
4, 2004, for our New Year's Show,
we played two sets of new
tunes, and young Nick Versaci played the plunger
to Zack's trumpet. An
unplanned Latin beat was
started by Dennis on the
drum set, then was
embellished with hand drums
by Randy and Chris.
This impromptu playfulness
then morphed into
Carlos Santana's "Oye
Como Va", then into
"Fly Me To The Moon".
On March 7, we had a full
house! On April 4, we
had a strange Unknown
Visitor. (We're not
going to try to explain it.
You "had to be there.")
The Brews Brothers, Randy
and Chris, played conga
drums on the Latin tunes.
The May 2 gig coincided with
the Carlsbad Street Fair,
and two-year-old Kiley
played and danced for us.
For the June 6 gig, the
house was packed, and the
air was charged with fun.
On the 4th of July, George
played the shaker egg with
the band, and Kiley again
charmed us all. For
the August 1st gig, Evona
Wacinski played bass,
and the audience responded
very favorably. On September 5,
Evona played with us again,
and flutist Sunny Yim
performed her jazz debut in
front of the enthusiastic
Labor Day audience. If
you weren't there, you
missed the conga line, too!
Isaac Crow joined us on
drums for the November show.
December was for jazzy
carols and poker.
Don Skelton was on bass for
us. It was good to
play with him again.
The 2005 New Year's show was fun,
too. Little Kiley
danced and blew the train
whistle to start Duke
Ellington's "Take the 'A'
Train." Donna and
Jacqueline sang for us.
The February 13 gig at the
brand new Vista Hennessey's
was great. The house
was packed and the
atmosphere was festive.
Again, at Carlsbad on March
6, the house was packed and
the audience was great.
At Vista on March 13, Zack
offered $40 for the name of
the tune that Dizzy
Gillespie turned into "Groovin'
High." Tim Luey, a
musician in the audience,
passed up the easy money!
(He knew it was
"Whispering.")
On April 3 at Carlsbad, we
had visitors from Washington
DC and from Manitoba,
Canada. Jazz trumpeter
Brent Jones joined us for a
couple tunes on flugelhorn.
Young Scott named tune after
tune after just hearing a few
notes of each.
Impressive. The
End-of-Month Vista Jazz
Party opened on April 24.
Kathy got three of her four
requests: Moonglow,
Stardust, and Cherry Pink &
Apple Blossom White.
The May Day gig at Carlsbad
was packed with 150 people.
Harley played bass and Tim
Luey was on the keyboard.
Once again, on May 29, Tim
played keyboard. This
time, our guitarist, Bruce,
was on bass. John
Telles sat in on alto sax,
and Jacqueline sang us a
couple songs. Since
then, we have been joined by
John Bowman on
tenor/alto/soprano saxes,
Michael Taylor on drums, and
our old friend Don Skelton
on bass. We failed to
stump Dave on July 31, and
we had a big crowd again at
Carlsbad on August 7.
Sunny played flute on a
Happy Birthday to Jay, and
there were lots of patrons
at Vista on August 28.
On September 25, Rose,
Jacqueline, George and Lynn
joined us on stage.
That was a two-act day, with
the Vista Street Fair ending
as The Upstairs Jazz Club
started in at Hennessey's.
Harley played bass on
September 25 and October 2.
We celebrated birthdays on
the 2nd, too. Larry
was here from Minnesota.
We played a request for
"When the Saints Come
Marchin' In." As
always, we closed with
"Lavender Gingham," our
Blues for Lynn. At
Vista on October 30, we
really "cut the mustard!"
Well, that's one you had to
be there for. Zack
ended up with a nice yellow
mustard contrast to his
black slacks! Ronnie
Bell played tenor sax and
flute. we will have
Max, a guest, on bass at
Carlsbad on November 6.
Max Carpinelli was on bass
on Nov. 6, and we had a very
young cymbal player!
At the end of the year, we
had
jazz versions of Christmas
carols, including "I saw
Mommy Kissing Santa Claus"
and "Blue Christmas" and
"Here Comes Santa Claus" and
"Feliz Navidad" and "The
Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts
Roasting on an Open Fire")
and "Merry Christmas,
Darling" and more.
In January, The Upstairs
Jazz Trio (Bruce, Jay and
Zack) played in Vista at The
Naked Bean. New
Orleans Jazz made the day
with whooping and hand
clapping for a large crowd
in Vista on February 26.
On March 5 we celebrated
Jaquelyn's birthday and she
sang "Besame Mucho" for los
amigos en la cocina.
On March 26 and on April 2, Charlie Romero
played clarinet on some
tunes with the band.
We played for the Jazz, Wine
& Chocolate Party of the new
Vista Chocolate Street Fair.
Seven-year-old Brice played
with the band at Vista on
June 25, and Nathan Hubbard
was the guest drummer.
The 1st Annual "4th of July
Eve Party" was intense and
exciting. The Irish
and the Germans won the
Immigrants shouting
competition!
Hennessey's Vista was packed
and rollicking for this
event. We'll see you
there next year!!
Patrick's blues harmonica
was a great addition to the
full-house fun at Carlsbad
on Sept 3rd. Come to
see the quintet at Hennessey's in Vista on Oct 28 for a Halloween costume party.
There are always surprises.
We don't even
know what's coming up.
That's life and that's jazz.
Special thanks to The Brews
Brothers, Chris and
Randy, on percussion, and to
the new Brews Crew,
with Chris, Randy, and Sunny
on percussion.
Special Thanks...
We offer special thanks to Trevor for the excellent recording,
graphics, photographic, and website work he has done. He designed our
band logo and this website, and he has been generous with his wide
range of technical expertise. Thank you, Trevor. (...and special thanks
from the trumpet player!!)
Also, thanks to Todd for the videotaping at the December
show at Rockin' Baja
Lobster.
Thanks to Aaron and his staff at Rockin'
Baja Lobster, and thanks to
Dan Cannon for hosting us at
the Flying Bridge.
Of course,
our thanks also go out to
Leroy, Jeff, and the gang at
Hennessey's in Carlsbad for
hosting us for the past
three years and a half
years!
...and
now, thanks to Leroy and
Brian at the new Vista
Hennessey's.
